Love Affair

We do strange things for love. Case in point–I have an on-going love affair with body art. Over the last 18 months, since my first tattooing experience, I have basically mapped out my entire body and assigned corresponding tattoos. Recently, I began to realize that hopeful full body tattoo with two new additions of Kanji to my forearms.

Being the type of guy I am, I decided to get something clever and slightly obscure. Thus, the Kanji I chose is Ichi-go Ichi-e. Roughlytranslated it means “One time, one meeting.” Kind of the carpe diem of Japanese. Again, being the kind of guy I am, I fully researched the phrase (which first revealed itself to me in Buddhism, somewhere along the line…). It is generally used both in Zen Buddhism and within the context of the Japanese tea ceremonies, in which the participants strive for complete mindfulness. This is why they usually take so damn long. It is also sometimes used within the martial arts which is appropriate–when you are in a life and death situation, as those who created the martial arts usually were when employing the art, you only have one chance to get things right.

Now, I decided to do this at 6:45 p.m. On a Friday night. With no appointment. After we arrived at the first (and closest studio), we were schlepped off to their sister studio who actually could take me that evening. We arrived about 20 minutes later and, after a bit of confusion about where exactly the place was, I successfully was the owner of two new tattoos. By the time we left it was close to 9:30 and dark. Now, I wasn’t driving and so my trusty co-pilot was trying to get home via my navigation. That right there should tell you what actually happened.

I would have sworn that the place we drove to was South of where we live, so naturally I told her to go North. It must have been those sneaky leprechauns that changed the signs on me because we actually went North to get there and needed South to get home.

Oops.

Long story short, we arrived home about 1 1/2 hours later than we should have. Co-pilot was a little less than pleased, as is to be expected. But I successfully received two more tattoos, turning a one night stand in New Orleans into a full blown affair.

Just don’t tell my Mom.
