Mr. Won Peak O’reean, Please.

*Ring Ring*
ME: Hello, —- Institute.
CALLER: Hello, can I-grumble grumble-to-grumble-O’reean?
ME: Sure, one moment.

This is an integral part of my job. To be honest, it is the only part of my job that requires me to actually think. Since I work at an institute that is an off-shoot of a Korean Buddhist temple, and since 70% of the people working here are of Korean origin, I receive a lot of phone calls from individuals who are also of Korean descent. Thus, there is a significant amount of miscommunication between me and the callers, as I am still not 100% at figuring out broken English, especially since the Korean accents tend to be quite thick.

*Ring Ring*
ME: Hello, —- Institute.
CALLER: Hello, can I please speak-grumble– Won O’reean?
ME: Sure, one moment.

At this point, I realize that it is the same person who had called a few minutes earlier. And again, having no idea who he is trying to get a hold of, since we have no one working here named “Won O’reean,” I do what any good receptionist would do–I push some random numbers and send his call to some unsuspecting co-worker of mine. Its not that I don’t want him to reach who he is trying to call or that I don’t care, its just that I have no idea what is going on. So I will let someone else figure it out.

A few more minutes go by.

*Ring Ring*
ME: Hello, —- Institute.
CALLER: Hello, can I please –grumble– Won -grumble- Peak O’reean?
ME: Sure, one moment.

Around his fifth call I realize what he is actually saying. He isn’t asking for Won Peak Orian, he is asking to talk to someone who speaks Korean. The light bulb above my head goes on and I transfer him to someone who speaks Korean. The strange part is that everyone else I transferred his call to also speaks Korean.
This confuses me, but whatever.

  1. Fan-freaking-tastic!
And yep, as a good receptionist, number smashing is definitely the way to go.

Sometimes when people yell at me about a bill I send them directly to upper management. đŸ™‚ Hehehe.
