May I see your credentials, please?

Why are credentials so important?  I have a difficult time understanding this.  It seems to me that it should be irrelivant whether or not I have my Ph.D. or have been teaching for years or whatever.  What if I just have a brilliant new outlook on something, a new way of approaching the same old problems?  Not saything that I do or anything, but still…

I think it is extremely foolish to assume that a higher degree brings with it the ability for abstract thought.  A 200 page research paper does not reflect one’s ability to change the world.  There are plenty of people who have nothing higher than a high school diploma that are changing the world.  And I have seen my fair share of Ph.D. holders who are doing absolutely nothing worth praising.  I think that an individual should be judged upon his or her own personal credentials rather than supposedly “earned” institutional credentials.

When did a piece of paper become more important than true wisdom?
